1. Motorola is back in the flagship race
What happened
Motorola confirmed on its U.S. website that the Signature 27 arrives in November. It is the company’s first true flagship phone in years. The phone was first shown in September at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, and it runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, Qualcomm’s top chip for phones this season.
Why it matters
In the U.S., buying a premium Android phone has mostly meant choosing between Samsung and Google. In recent years Motorola has been best known for affordable phones and its Razr flip phones, so a full flagship is a change of pace. The company promises big AI features and what it calls an elite-level camera system, and early leaks suggest the cameras could be the highlight. A strong third option means more choice for buyers, and more pressure on prices from the two current leaders.
OTN take
Our take: the November launch is official, but the exact date and the price are not. A retail leak suggests the Signature 27 won’t be cheap. If you are shopping for a premium Android phone right now, waiting a few weeks to compare costs you nothing.
2. Alexa can now fix your Amazon deliveries
What happened
Amazon added more than 100 shopping tasks to Alexa ahead of the holiday season. You can now ask the assistant to create and edit shopping lists, change how often a subscription item arrives (for example, from every month to every three months), or update a delivery address and drop-off instructions. Alexa can also answer questions about Prime and Audible memberships and help with billing or payment problems.
Why it matters
These are the small account chores that usually mean opening the app, finding the right menu and tapping through several screens. Amazon says more than 400 million people used Alexa to shop in the past year, and that use of its agent-style features, where the assistant completes a task for you instead of only answering a question, grew eight times this year. Shopping is where AI assistants are being tested most directly with real money.
OTN take
Our take: this is official from Amazon, but the company didn’t say which countries get the new tasks first. Start with a simple request, like changing how often a subscription arrives, and check the result in your account before you trust Alexa with bigger orders.
3. First hands-on: the iPad mini’s screen impresses
What happened
The Verge tried the new iPad mini at Apple’s “Pro and Tell” event. The 8.5-inch OLED screen looked exceptional, and the optional nano-texture matte finish almost completely removed glare. The front camera now sits on the long edge, like on the rest of the iPad lineup, which works better for video calls with the tablet held sideways.
Why it matters
The iPad mini starts at $699 with the A20 Pro chip, and an early Geekbench listing shows it about 47 percent faster than the previous mini on a single core. According to Apple’s specs, it is also 5.4 mm thin and rated IP67 for water and dust, a first for an iPad. The limits are familiar: the screen still stops at 60Hz, and the tablet still uses Touch ID in the top button instead of Face ID. The starting price is also $200 higher than the previous model’s.
OTN take
Our take: these are first impressions, not a full review. If you read or draw a lot, the matte option is worth a look. Pre-orders are open, and the iPad mini ships on November 6.
