OTN 60 No. 050: Hackers Ran Up Bills on People’s AI Accounts

Hackers ran up bills on people’s AI accounts.

By Gene B. Geraissati, Founder & Tech Curator | OTN 60 video

What happened

Hackers broke into an older system at OpenCode, a popular AI coding app, and took the keys some users had saved there to pay for AI services. About 1.4 percent of its online users were hit. Some got charges of hundreds of dollars, a few over 1,000.

Why it matters

Those keys work like a credit card for AI. Anthropic and Google blocked the stolen ones, OpenAI is helping refund the charges, and OpenCode says refunds are on the way. The OpenCode app itself was not affected.

OTN take

Our take: the company confirmed the attack, but it still hasn’t said how the hackers got in. If you pay for AI tools, turn on spending limits and alerts, and don’t save your keys in more places than you need.
