Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro can top 14,000 dollars.

What happened

Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at 2,899 dollars. But a fully loaded 16-inch model, with the M5 Max chip, 128 gigabytes of memory and 16 terabytes of storage, costs 14,549 dollars. TechCrunch notes the old 16-inch topped out at 10,149. Pre-orders open October 30th, and it ships November 6th.

Why it matters

Most of that jump comes from upgrades. The 16 terabytes of storage add 7,000 dollars, and 128 gigabytes of memory add 2,000. Memory chips are scarce right now, partly because AI data centers buy so many, and that pushes laptop prices up.

OTN take

Our take: these are official Apple prices. Very few people need the top model. If you want touch, start with the base model and use an external drive for extra storage. It costs far less.
